Art, Music, and Healthy Living
Located just off the beaten path of Powell River’s busy downtown commercial district, Local Loco’s provides an escape from the ordinary where creativity and self-expression thrives. The cafe serves healthy, beautifully prepared dishes, as well as an assortment of healthy beverages including herbal teas, real fruit smoothies, and maté (a healthy alternative to coffee).
The decor of the cafe is comprised of consigned artwork from the numerous artisans throughout the region. Additional ambience is provided by live music from Powell River’s many talented musicians as well as various acts touring up the coast.
Local Loco’s works to promote self-sustainablity by growing vegetables and herbs organically for use in the menu and producing as little waste as possible by maintaining a strict recycling program.
Become a part of Local Loco’s by sharing in the enjoyment of art, music, and healthy living!

Renovations Underway

Local Loco's is closed for 3 weeks starting November 1. During this time we are increasing our floor space by building a 6' extension all along the north side (creek-side) of the building. We are also removing the top 2/3 of the wall separating the main room from the front room to give a much more open flow of space. The front counter will be completely redesigned with new display cases.
Upstairs in the kitchen we are expanding the food prep area by more than double and are adding an additional 4 gas powered burners for a total of 8. Local Loco's will be poised to process food orders much more efficiently with shorter wait times.

Loco Photo Gallery Finally Online!!

Yes, it is true. After 2 years of shooting photos at Loco's, Corey has finally found a super simple way of creating a photo page (getting a new computer that works helps a lot, not to mention a little gem of a program called iWeb). You can now see a pictoral essay on the building and constant evolution of Local Loco's, as well as pics of freinds, family, and our amazing staff over the years.

The 3rd annual Powell River Folk Feast happens on Saturday June 9th, noon until midnight at Local Loco’s Cafe on Willingdon Ave.
The event promotes art, music, and healthy living. It will feature an outdoor craft fair, live music from local and out-of-town acts on the newly created outdoor stage, and, of course, a healthy feast of great food. Once again this year we will be raising funds for the local SPCA and the Kyoto Twist Solar Cooking Society.

Folk Feast was originally created in June 2005 to raise funds to get Local Loco’s Cafe off the ground and introduce the cafe’s owners to the community. The event was such a tremendous success that Folk Feast became a yearly event with proceeds going to local charities. Last year raised over $500 for the Powell River SPCA and the Kyoto Twist Solar Cooking Society.
This year’s musical headliner is a funky/groovy foursome from Kelowna named Terza Rima. Their fun-filled bouncy grooves got people jumping at last year’s Diversity festival. Other performers include Ethnic Junction, Cris and Chris, Ray Rothschild, Dan Erickson, Groove Garden, The Cushing McLeod Blues Band, and DJ’s Dub Commandante and Marlin.
Arts and Crafts vendors can contact Skye at 485-5626. For more info visit www.locallocos.com.

July 8 '06-Kathaumixw documentary shoots on location at Loco's
Local Loco's had been chosen as one of the locations to shoot parts for a documentary about Powell River's International Choral Kathaumixw. The documentary is directed by Tony Papa who has done previous work in Powell River with his film Suzuki Speaks which aired as a CBC Television special. The Guandong Experimental Middle School Choir from China filled our garden space with an amazing display of color and sound for the shoot. See our Media page for video clips and pics.

July 2 '06- World Class Entertainment at Loco's for Canada Day
Local Loco's celebrated Canada Day and our one year anniversary on July 1st with a day full of great entertainment. Don Alder headlined our Garden Stage by putting on a stunning display of finger-pickin', guitar slappin' goodness. We are hoping to bring him back for Blackberry Fest. Hugh Fisher and Doug Biggs made the trek to Powell River to play great sets. DJ Lalu and friend DJ Soma (UK, Mexico, Vancouver) closed the night with an amazing underground breakbeat and tech funk set (listen to his set here). Thanks again to Dub Commandante, Cris and Sue, The Sojourners, and False Haruspex for braving the heat and putting on great shows.

June 6 '06- Diversity 2006
Local Loco's will be setting up shop at this year's Diversity festival on Texada Island (July 14-16). We will have falafel wraps, veggie and beef kabobs, veggie curry stew, quesadillas, as well as banana pancakes and fruit salad for breakfast. We will also be running an open mic stage complete with a drum kit, as well as an art gallery tent. This huge undertaking will require a lot of hands and we are currently looking for volunteers to help us make Local Loco's contribution to the festival positive an enjoyable for all. All our volunteers will be well fed and we'll reimburse part of the entry fee costs. Please contact Corey, Craig or Skye at 485-5626 or email corey@locallocos.com.

May 21 '06- Folk Feast 2006 a success!
Last year's Folk Feast raised money from the community to help us open our doors on July 1 2005. This year we returned the favor by raising over $500 for local charities. We raised $303.46 for the Powell River SPCA and $240 for the Kyoto Twist Solar Cooking Society. The Kyoto Twist program will use the money to pay for a solar cooker and a week long training program for a family in Haiti. Each solar cooker in daily use reduces greenhouse gas benisons by over a ton a year, and greatly reduces a family's expenditure on fuel. Additionally, the event helped us gather several bags of groceries for the food bank. We would like to thank musical performers Ethnic Junction, Fionna Tyler, Sheila Butts, Eugene Krauss, The Sojourners, and drum circle organizer France Gendron. Thanks also to Dub Commandante who provided a perfect sunny afternoon reggae mix, and to Lalu who closed the evening with his energetic house and world beats.
